Establishing a Successful Partnership for Your Project

Selecting the right design professional is crucial to the success of your project. Each firm offers a unique set of skills, expertise, and value. Investing time in choosing a team that aligns with your needs will foster an effective partnership.

Steps to Guide Your Selection Process:

  1. Define Your Project Needs: Reflect on your project's scope, priorities, and objectives. While you don't need all details finalized, having clear priorities will aid in finding a suitable professional.

  2. Identify Potential Firms: Compile a list of firms by seeking recommendations from colleagues and acquaintances who have collaborated with architects or licensed interior designers.

  3. Request Information: Reach out to the firms on your list to obtain their qualifications and references.

  4. Narrow Your Choices: Evaluate the information received and shortlist a few firms. Request detailed written proposals from each.

  5. Assess Proposals: Ensure each proposal addresses:

    • Their understanding of your project.

    • Proposed approach, steps, and schedule.

    • Perspective on the overall project budget.

    • Suggestions for project delivery or approach to procurement of construction contractors.

    • Relevant experience with similar projects.

    • Fee structure and potential additional expenses.

    • Suggested form of agreement for your project.

  6. Consult CAA Guidelines: The Consulting Architects of Alberta (CAA) provides a guide to the scope of services architects offer and appropriate fees for various project types and sizes. Selecting a professional based on qualifications and adhering to CAA guidelines ensures value for your investment.

  7. Conduct Interviews: If applicable, meet with the final candidates to assess compatibility, discuss schedules, fee structures, and address any concerns. Consider their relevant experience, technical competence, budget considerations, and timelines, and fit.

  8. Review Past Projects: If possible, visit completed projects by the finalists to evaluate their work quality and suitability for your needs.

  9. Make an Informed Decision: Reflect on your priorities and the insights gained during the selection process to choose the best fit. The ideal professional will listen to your concerns, help set goals, and translate them into an effective design.

  10. Formalize the Agreement: Begin your project by reviewing and signing a written contract with your chosen architect or licensed interior designer to ensure clarity on the terms of your agreement.
